Code of Ethics (English)

Mission Statement 

Noticiero Móvil aims to provide more inclusive and diverse news coverage. As a local digital news platform, we strive to educate our students and members of the community, as well as show that we are all connected despite our differences. Though this bilingual news site that is for and about the Latino population in Reno, we hope to help change the narrative about immigrants and their descendants in the United States. It is our mission to provide unbiased, accessible, and relevant content to and about all people in Northern Nevada. 

Preamble

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Maria Ressa said, “as we stand by our ethics we pull the world together in the battle for facts.”

This guiding principle dictates how Noticiero Móvil and its journalists tell stories because we value the trust of the community. Noticiero Móvil journalists are dedicated to upholding the highest standards of journalistic ethical principles. Our practices are in line with our peers of other university news outlets like the Daily Bruin and Harvard Crimson. Additional adherence to national journalistic ethical standards set forth in the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and Dow Jones as well as international journalistic standards set forth by news outlets and media groups such as: The Guardian, Al Jazeera, and the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) ensures our practices also align with ethical standards on both a national and global scale.

Noticiero Móvil journalists adhere to the following code of ethics in pursuance of its mission:

  1. Maintain accuracy separated from opinion
  2. Highlight diverse points of view and opinions without partiality or bias, while also avoiding false balance
  3. Depict an accurate and inclusive portrayal of societal groups by ensuring diverse representation and avoiding stereotypes
  4. Minimize harm
  5. Be accountable 
  6. Be transparent
  7. Show respect, sensitivity and compassion to our audiences and sources
  8. Report fairly 
  9. Avoid conflicts of interest 
  10. Examine our sources and surrounding institutions carefully to ensure those in authority are responsible for their actions.
