Reno, Nev. — Over the last ten years Noticiero Móvil has shown what’s possible when bilingual news, student journalism, and curious reporters are allowed to flourish. Celebrate online via our YouTube Channel, https://www.youtube.com/@NoticieroMovil, on Oct. 23 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. as we celebrate this important milestone.

Founded in 2015 with a $35,000 grant from the Online News Association Challenge Fund for Innovation in Journalism Education to provide bilingual multimedia news coverage of the 2016 Presidential Election, since Noticiero Móvil has grown from a bold classroom idea into a recognized journalism program:

  • Through our partnerships student articles have appeared on KUNR Public Radio, This Is Reno and The Sierra Nevada Ally. Noticiero Móvil crosspublishes articles from these publications and also The Nevada Independent, Reno News & Review and Factchequedo, a factchecking news wire.
  • Our student and staff talent have earned major awards in student journalism including national and regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, a Gracie Award and Hearst student competition finals.
  • The international travel opportunities have enabled students to travel for reporting and cultural exchange. In March 2025, students went to Costa Rica and learned to communicate complex science topics into beautiful multimedia stories; and Paris, where they attended the 2024 Olympics and interviewed the lead Telemundo anchors gaining firsthand experience in international media coverage.
  • Garnered attention from national and international media partners like the Center for Community at the University of Vermont, Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication, and the Fundación Gabo in Colombia which included Noticiero Móvil in a guide of more than 1,500 native digital media sites in Latin America and the U.S.
  • Universities across the nation will soon include Noticiero Móvil as a case study in their coursework thanks to chapters in “Reporting on Latino/a/x Communities” (out now) and “News Desert U” (forthcoming Fall 2026).

Noticiero Móvil has by 2025 trained more than 100 UNR students not just in the reporting and delivery of digital and multimedia news, but also in graphic design and public relations. Our alumni work at KUNR Public Radio, KRNV Channel 4, KTVN Channel 2, The Nevada Independent, the City of Reno, the League of California Cities, WNYC, The Intercept, The Washington Post, NBC Bay Area News, the Mountain West News Network, Bloomberg Breaking News, and Good Morning America.

Support Noticiero Móvil so that it continues to bridge the news desert gap in our community. Help grow bilingual journalism to ensure that Spanish‑speakers are not left without access to timely, relevant information and that the Reynolds School of Journalism is at the forefront of this education.
