Back to School for Most, Despite the Smokey Skies

The first day back for the children of the Washoe County School District (WCSD) has been one for the record books.

Eight of the district’s 66 schools closed due to fires burning near the border with California and the shifting wind conditions. Families are encouraged to look for notifications from the WCSD about when these school may reopen.

The other 58 facilities – including the two brand new Stead Elementary and Vaughn Middle Schools – opened with the usual excitement and nervous jitters. WCSD shared the below video of the first day of school for the communities enjoyment.

Last week, the WCSD released the school calendar, announcing that the last day of school will be June 4, 2027, for students in the valley, and June 9 for those living in Incline Village. According to the district, no additional days will be added at the end of the school year, so we must assume that the days students at these eight schools will miss will be added to the current calendar.
