GSR Gunman Dies; Families Begin To Mourn [Video]

Dakota Hawver, the suspect in Monday’s shooting at the Grand Sierra Resort, died overnight according to the Sparks Police Department.

Hawver, according to authorities, had no prior criminal record, or history of mental health issues. A motive has yet to be given for why he initiated the shooting that claimed the lives of three individuals. Three others were also injured in the incident.

The victims killed on Monday were: Justin Aguila and Andrew Canepa, both 33, from Thousand Oaks, California, and Angel Martinez, 66, of Reno-Sparks.

Two of the three survivors of the attack have been identified as Dylan McLean and Matt Harper Sitler. The third name is still unknown.

Sitler was reportedly shot in the shoulder and then in the back. He fell to the ground and a nearby driver took him to the hospital, according to his uncle who flew in from Southern California with his sister, Sitler’s mom and father. He went into emergency surgery to remove his spleen on Tuesday. Sitler remains in critical condition at Renown, but is now said to be stable.

Noticiero Móvil cannot confirm McLean’s injuries or  the status of his condition at this time, but reports claim he was possibly shot in the torso and or shoulder.

Aguila, Canepa, McLean and Sitler were together for a bachelor party and were on their way to the airport waiting for an Uber when Hawver fired at them. According to Sitler’s family, a group of 13 friends was staying in an Airbnb in Lake Tahoe, but then traveled to Reno to catch their flight home.

The group graduated from Thousand Oaks High school in 2010, and several played on the same high school football team. Canepa was known in his community for hosting a fundraiser for victims of the shooting at the Borderline Grill in 2018. Now, Canepa is a victim too.

GoFundMe pages have been created for Canepa and Aguila to help the victims’ families during this difficult time.

Martinez, the third victim, was driving through the casino parking lot when Hawver, who was hiding behind a truck while fleeing police, came out and shot him. To help with funeral costs, his niece also started a GoFundMe page where she stated Martinez was a long time casino worker in Reno and Sparks and comes from a big family with 11 siblings.

The Grand Sierra Resort reported that no employees were injured in the shooting, so it’s unknown why Martinez was in the parking lot of the casino at the time.

An interfaith community vigil was held on Wednesday at 5:30 P.M. at the Unity Center of Reno.
