Host #1: There’s definitely plenty of excitement about and for Latinos who love the Olympics.
2. FIRST DISCUSSION TOPIC (4:00 min)
🎶 Short transition music.
Host #1: There are a few big-name Latinos in this year’s Olympics games, with one major name standing out above the rest. Auston Matthews es el capitán del equipo de los Estados Unidos en hockey and the current star of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Matthews es mexicano from his mom’s side and he’s become one of the top names amongst Latino athletes from the United States, as he is a globally recognized star and one of the most marketed athletes for the National Hockey League. The NHL recently advertised Hispanic Heritage Month and even had Matthews do an interview at a Mexican restaurant in Toronto.
In a sport that doesn’t have a heavy Latino presence or representation, he is proud to be on the ice as a Latino. The biggest names in the sport for Latinos include Auston Matthews, Scott Gomez, Bill Guerin, and Max Pacioretty. Con menos representación, the NHL created different attempts to help boost Latinos in hockey, having led to more hope for a better future for them in the NHL.
Host #1: Matthews and the United States team are currently winning in the Olympics and are looking to capture the gold medal this year. Matthews was the first Latino in hockey to be on a video game cover and to captain the United States. His goal scoring and tenacity is what has led him to the star power that he has today.
On his debut game in the NHL he scored four goals. That was the first time a rookie had ever scored four goals in their opening game, and it was a historic moment for the sport. No other games were on that day so all hockey fans were watching Matthews take down the Ottawa Senators.
I mean, he’s the captain for a reason! He plays with confidence and has commanded the offense with precision and accuracy, but this is just the start for Latinos in hockey.
Not to mention, because he is one of the most marketed players in the sport, it makes it easier for him to be marketed toward the Latino community. Muchas de las ciudades con equipos en el NHL tenían un Latino fan base, especially for the Blackhawks and Flyers. Bringing in a more diverse audience would be great, and we think Austin Matthews would be an awesome start.
🎤 Producer (off-camera): Auston Matthews is a proud Mexican American who is proud of his heritage. Where do you see Latinos in Hockey in the future?
Host #2: Well, Matthews is the first Mexican-American to hold the honor of being captain for team USA hockey and this is a very important moment for our culture in the sport of hockey.
Host #1: Yeah! And who knows maybe we could see more Latino captains in the future.
👉 SEGUE: Now it’s time for a segment on our show called “el nombre de las posiciones”, where we’ll see if you can guess in English what position in hockey I am saying in Spanish. (Hey listeners, we’ll drop this info in our show page on Noticiero Móvil!)
¿Cierto o falso?: Diferentes posiciones incluyen el portero (goalie), el centro (center), el defensa, (defenseman).
Host #2: Plenty of other Latinos are being represented throughout the Olympics from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Argentina … There are close to 40 Latino athletes at this year’s Winter Olympics. La representación es muy importante because there is the notion that there is only a Latino presence in the Summer Olympics.
Even in Latin America, there are some cold climates which allows for Latinos to participate in winter sports. Latinos, while expected to play summer sports, are breaking barriers and are playing winter sports too. To be sure, some of these sports are harder for some Latinos to access due to the climate and price.
We were just talking about hockey earlier, and a sport like that is a massive commitment with travel and competition, but also is very expensive to play with gear. Not as many American and Latin American communities will focus on winter sports for these reasons, which has made Latino representation in some of these sports so hard to come by.
Host #1: Latinos made history with Brazil taking home a gold medal in the men’s giant slalom with Lucas Pinheiro Braathen winning gold for Brazil. Brazil has won gold and has broken barriers for Latinos in snow sports. This gold medal win was a massive moment. Pinheiro Braathen was born in Norway and was born to a Brazilian mother. With Brazil capturing gold they have become the only Latino country in this year’s Olympics to win a gold medal so far.
Latino representation is extremely important because it unites communities, and it’s not an impossible accomplishment either. One of the most important aspects of the Olympics is pride and wearing the colors of your nation’s flag, so knowing that more Latinos participate in the summer Olympics is really exciting.
Discussion: Discussion questions here: What other sports could you see Latinos win a gold medal in? Do you have a favorite Latino athlete in these Olympic Games?
👉 SEGUE: Latinos are breaking barriers and making names for themselves in these Olympic Games. With more Latinos appearing every four years there’s no telling how bright the future is for Latinos in the Winter Olympic Games.
