World Cup Fever Fills the Coffers of Small Businesses
SAN JOSE, Calif. – Amongst the excitement of the FIFA World Cup that fills the San Francisco Bay Area, many businesses are packed and busy with people who are from the area, along with those who are traveling to come and cheer for their favorite teams.
Noticiero Móvil spoke with Pizza Bocca Lupo co-owner Jenneke De Vries in the San Pedro Square Market and she told us how business has been with the turn out of people.
“I would say Fridays and Saturdays are our busiest days. We have an outdoor plaza. It’s a large space, it’s communal areas, so we’re pretty busy on those days. But now it feels like every day is like a Friday times five,” said De Vries.
The increased foot traffic has created a lively atmosphere throughout the market, with supporters gathering before matches, celebrating after victories, and spending time exploring the surrounding businesses. For restaurants like Pizza Bocca Lupo, the World Cup has brought a unique mix of cultures and energy to downtown San Jose.
“Its just been amazing, like busy, especially during the Mexico, Colombia, USA games and just the energy here is just amazing,” De Vries said. “We’ve had a lot of people come in and buy pizzas, like lines out the door. It feels like almost like the Super Bowl earlier.” San Jose hosted the annual American football championship this past February 8.
Pizza Bocca Lupo was the first business in San Pedro Square Market and has called it home for nearly 15 years. Having witnessed countless events THAT bring people together over the years, the restaurant is now experiencing another memorable moment as soccer fans from around the world turn San Pedro Square into one of the Bay Area’s premier World Cup watch party destinations.
The tournament has not only united fans through the sport but also provided a boost for local businesses that help make the market a cornerstone of the downtown community.
“Well I’m just very grateful that FIFA and the San Jose Earthquakes decided to organize such an amazing fan fest. Again, like what I mentioned earlier, it’s such a unifying event,” she continued, “just simply an epic experience and I’m just grateful that they chose this area to make that happen and to be part of this it’s very special something I will remember forever.”
