Reno Begins to Recover After Deadly GSR Shooting [video]

A tragedy in our community occurred on Monday morning, when a gunman opened fire at the Grand Sierra Resort where six people were injured resulting in three fatalities. Two victims remain in critical condition, after one was released, according to police officials

The event first unfolded when the suspect walked onto the GSR valet at approximately 7:25 in the morning. He approached the valet area and opened fire at a group of people. At first his weapon malfunctioned, but when fixed, he managed to shoot people at that location.

As both police and hotel security began to make chase, the gunman ran into the parking lot where he claimed the life of a driver. More gunshots were exchanged. A bullet hit one of the patrol cars and the shattered glass injured an officer (who on Tuesday was released from the hospital). Eventually, authorities subdued the gunman. The suspect is under custody and remains in critical condition at the hospital. The six Reno officers involved in the shooting have been placed under administrative leave, according to updates. The Sparks Police department will assist with the officer-involved investigation.

One of the victims was identified Tuesday morning as Andrew Canepa, co-owner of a restaurant in Newbury Park, California. People who knew Canepa were stunned at the news of his death, citing that he helped victims of the 2018 mass shooting at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, and now he had become a victim himself.

Currently, law enforcements have found no links between the victim and the suspect. A candlelight vigil will be held at the Unity Center of Reno at 2207 Kings Row, on Wednesday, starting at 5:30 p.m.
